Cyclone Shirley Strikes

Queensland’s Shirley Smith has claimed her first Australian title with an emphatic 4-0 victory over the promising Jessica Woods in the final of the 2011 Australian National Women’s Snooker Championship. Full results can be accessed from the ABSC website at

Although small in stature, Smith cut a swathe of damage through the knock-out stage with some impressive performances that left well-credentialed opponents in her wake. In addition to this she also recorded a well compiled 43 which was the Championship’s highest break. Overall, it was a dominant display from the popular Maroochydore cueist which left no-one in any doubt that ‘Shirl the Girl’ was a worthy 2011 Champion.

Fellow Queenslander and runner-up Jessica Woods also had a good Championship and was gallant in defeat. The 4-0 score line does not really reflect the closeness of the Final which saw all frames not decided until the pink or black disappeared from the table. Woods, who is yet to turn 18, shows great potential and is certainly shaping as the player to watch in coming years.

Spectators enjoyed some exciting snooker throughout the Championship, particularly in the Quarter-Finals with three games all going to the 5th and deciding frame. Shirley Smith overcame current (10 time) NSW Champion Anne Green 3-2 while Jessica Woods had an equally close 3-2 tussle with local player Rhonda Knight. First-time Nationals entrant Jacquie Baird came out firing to lead 2010 runner-up Kathy Howden 2-0 before claiming a narrow 3-2 result in perhaps the upset of the Championship. Defending Champion Kathy Parashis had a comfortable 3-0 win over Jenny Budd in the remaining game.

The Parashis vs. Smith Semi-Final was perhaps the game of the Championship. Smith led 3-1 and appeared close to victory before Parashis showed great determination and control to level up at 3-3 with consecutive clearances; a long pink and black in the 5th frame followed by an equally impressive blue, pink and black in the 6th. Tension rose even further in the 7th and deciding frame before Smith eventually closed it out with final pots on the blue and pink.

The National title was played from 24th – 26th June on the NSW Central Coast at Mingara Recreation Club. 2011 marked the 3rd consecutive year that this Championship has been held at Mingara. ABSC President, Mr. Barrie Jones, attended the event and acknowledged the strong contribution by all involved towards the success of women’s snooker in Australia.
